My Top 14 Songs of 2014!

Hey y'all! I know I've been super absent and flaky with this blog, but hey I'm trying! Being a teacher and a part time blogger is super difficult. On top of having 100 unfinished video games and just the energy drain of finishing a 7 hour work day. But one of my New Year's resolutions is to be better at updating this for all like 10 people that read it! Without further ado, let's get this list started:

14. "Leave Your Lover" - Sam Smith

I know some of you are thinking LOL WAT?! But yes, "Stay With Me" is a jam and was no doubt a a year end smash, but this is my list and this was my favorite song off his debut. It really showed off those chops and you know, it was hella relatable (;_____;). It's rare a gay artist isn't overshadowed by their sexuality, and I'm so glad we're not sleeping on Sam! He is a tremendous artist and I cannot wait to see him again in concert.

13. "Into the Blue" - Kylie Minogue

The official (in my eyes) queen of Australia released her album "Kiss Me Once" and my god was it amazing. The lead single "Into the Blue" was a brilliant first taste of the album and had me screaming "INTO THE BUHLOOOO" for months. Now, I need her to get state side so I can see her in concert. After her iTunes Festival performance, I am in dire need!

12. "Sorry You're Sick" - AM Taxi
Local Chicago band AM Taxi finally made their triumphant comeback with their EP "King of the Pond", and this cover of the Ted Hawkins' original was a major standout. I was lucky enough to see them perform it live and I haven't been able to stop returning to this song ever since.

11. "Bang Bang" - Jessie J, Ariana Grande, and Nicki Minaj

At first, I hated this song. It got the rep of being a "Lady Marmalade" copy cat. But then I was forced to listen to it enough that I have become OBSESSED. This is one of my go-to songs when I can't decide what I want to listen to. I just can't decide which part is just suited for me though??? Am I and Ari or a Nicki????

10. "Fancy" - Iggy Azealea (feat. Charli XCX)

I KNOW YOU GUYS. I should be careful talking about Igloo now with all her controversy with Azealia Banks. But this song no doubt was one of my favorites of 2014. We got to revisit Clueless and I spent countless car rides bumping this and screaming it out windows with various friends and family memebers. I'm also just happy Charli is getting recognized as an artist tbh.

9. "Shake It Off" - Taylor Swift

This is another song I didn't think I was going to like because back then it was "ew TS" ya know? But then I decided to click play on a whim because my mom was about to listen to it before me. God forbid. And of course, like the rest of the pop kids of the world, I fell in love with Taylor and and her new sound.

8. "Anaconda" - Nicki Minaj

LOL OKAY DON'T JUDGE ME! AGAIN, I hated this song when it first came out. I was like oh absolutely not with this noise. But then that video came out. I was hooked. End of story. And who doesn't like pretending to twerk to this song?

7. "Not On Drugs" - Tove Lo

My best friend would kill me if I didn't put a Tove Lo song on here. She literally has become a break out artist of 2014. I got to see her before "Habits"became a huge thing. Bby girl put on a show! I personally have never touched a drug, but I have been in love (questionable).

6. " West Coast" - Lana Del Rey

My sad lamenting queen followed up her "Paradise" EP with "Ultraviolence" with this song as the lead single. At first I was like okay this is cool, but wasn't in love. But after a few listens I was all about this song. Granted, I still don't know all the lyrics, but another of my besties and I would text each other basically the whole song to each other, so I can learn them one day!

5. "2 On" - Tinashe (feat. Schoolboy Q)

TINASHE. My god. This was her year. The lead single off her recent album Aquarius was my jam for so long. This song just brings out your inner hip hop dancer even though it shouldn't for me because its not pretty. I could do without Schoolboy because his part is quite vulgar, but WHAT. A . JAM.

4. "Do It Again" Royksopp and Robyn

Yes, we don't have a new Robyn album. But let's be real this partnership was still pretty great. "Do It Again" was obviously the summer dance jam of 2014. The video went way over my head, but this song is so perfect.

3. "Chandelier" - Sia

THE RETURN OF SIA!!!! After penning great songs like "Perfume", we finally got new music from one of pop's biggest treasures. "Chandelier" had that soaring chorus that still sends chills down my spine. And that video with little Maddie. YASSSSSS!

2. "Rollercoaster" - Bleachers

My favorite album this year hands down was from Bleachers. I absolutely LOVE this song. Jack Antonoff and his crew are musical geniuses. Seeing them perform this live was a treat and I can't wait to see it happen again in April. You cannot listen to this song and not want to do basically a Carlton dance. YOU CANNOT.

1. "G.U.Y." - Lady Gaga

Just because Bleachers was my absolute favorite artist of 2014, doesn't mean I would forget my queen. Obviously ARTPOP didn't appeal to most of you lesser lovers of music, but I have been on board ever since it's debut. And then she released GUY and the video for it. mY GOD WHAT AN ARTISTIC JOURNEY. Andy Cohen, Housewives, guns, wings, VENUS! In all honesty, this song was amazing and really smart. My mom hates it, which meant it would be my favorite.

Other VERY honorable mentions:

  • "Jealous (Remix)" - Nick Jonas (feat. Tinashe)
  • "Summer" - Calvin Harris
  • "Can't Stop Dancing" - Becky G
  • "Out of the Woods", "Style", and "Blank Space" - Taylor Swift
  • "Riptide" - Vance Joy
  • "Partition" and "Flawless Remix (feat. Nicki Minaj)" - Beyonce
  • "Dance Like You Got Credit" - Cazwell
  • "Shut Up and Dance" - Walk the Moon
  • "Break Free", "Love Me Harder", and "Problem" - Ariana Grande
  • "Break The Rules" and "Boom Clap" - Charli XCX

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO MY MOST BEAUTIFUL READERS!!
